It's easy being Green.Plastics. Just one word... Green. Just recycle it.
A lot of people bring up the movie "The Graduate". Plastics have been instrumental in so many changes in our lives today - and the quality of our lives. Plastics are produced by and large from non-renewable resources: petroleum and natural gas. We must have respect for these resources and make sure they are fully utilized - and that unused materials are recycled into new materials rather than refuse.
It wasn't too long ago that we had a large dumpster outside our plant that would be emptied twice weekly and sent to the dump. Inside were office papers, cardboard, plastic pop bottles, and tons of different plastics waiting for their trip to the landfill. Today, we have a dumpster dedicated to cardboard which gets recycled weekly, and another very small dumpster for real trash. Wooden pallets are recycled internally or sold to companies that refurbish and return them to industry. Throughout our building we have 60 gallon containers that collect office paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum containers and are picked up weekly. In the warehouse, we have 200 gallon gaylords on pallets that segregate the different plastics we cut each day: acrylic, polycarbonate, PETG, PVC, HDPE, LDPE, Propylene, ABS, and styrene. To the extent we have plastics that are not easily recycled, we have dedicated bins in our showroom and sell these remnants to the public. Putting any of these materials into the landfill is unacceptable when there are other channels available.
Plastics recycling services are available worldwide now. Your local city or county government should have links to their recycling programs - or to local services that provide recycling. It starts in your home - and in your office. Even if you pay to have the containers collected in your office, it is worth the small cost to send these materials back for another round.
Ridout Plastics promotes recycling and the use of recycled materials in the marketplace. Many of the plastics we sell have a "utility" grade that uses reprocessed materials along with virgin resins. ABS, PTFE and UHMW are commonly available both ways. There are other specialty sheets made entirely from recycled material. While they don't always perform as well as virgin resin counterparts, they have a role. If you're curious, don't hesitate to ask us about these materials.
